The Buriti Palm, also known as miriti or mbiriti in Tupi-Guarani, translates to “she who contains water” or “tree of life.” It holds significant socio-cultural importance. The fruits are used to make sweets and liqueurs, and the leaves are processed to extract the fiber, commonly known as buriti linen.
Some believe it’s named the “tree of life” because it fulfills all human needs, as every part of it is useful.
The entire process, from raw material collection, fiber extraction, and management, is done manually. It involves careful interspersed harvesting of palm trees and fiber boiling. The final work, created through crochet and macramé, is not only beautiful but also highly resistant, with the added benefit of not easily wrinkling.
